About this character counter

This free online character counter tool counts what a reader sees: emoji, accented letters, and Chinese characters each count as one, using your browser’s grapheme segmentation rather than raw code units — so 你好 is two characters here, and a 👨‍👩‍👧 family emoji is one, not five. The bytes tile shows the UTF-8 size, which is what APIs and databases usually limit.

Looking for the character counter in Word? It lives under Review → Word Count — but pasting here is faster and also gives you sentence, line, and byte counts at once. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored: counting happens entirely in this tab, which makes it safe for drafts and confidential text.
